A few years ago article directories were all the rage… then they died, or did they?
If you think they did, you are in for a huge surprise.
Walk with me (or the internet version – bear with me)
I’m going to quote Buffet here… he said something about buying when others sell and selling when others buy, but I couldn’t find his exact words, so I found another awesome quote that fits perfectly:
“Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy and Greedy When Others Are Fearful”
The quote is so right on I could leave this article as is, but I’ll tell you what it means.
It means you should not build links when the dumb dumbs build them and you should build links when they don’t.
This rule applies for everything, and not just for article directory links.
What did I do?
When article directories were the bomb and everybody was spinning their articles to the point they were unreadable, and submitting them to any possible directory using mass submission tools, I sat back and watched…
…I knew that would lead to Google removing a bunch of sites from their index… and good they did, neither me, nor you need spam all over the internet. They only removed the crappy ones though, the ones that had been accepting not readable spun articles.
The rest, the ones that had been about quality remained (and still are) a pretty great source of backlinks.
Why did SEOs stop using them?
Because they did not… the sheep did, those, who when the shepherd says jump, jump as high as possible. I don’t think you are one of them (you are reading this, you are smart)…
…just like those same sheep had spammed the crap out of those directories before that.
Article directories have always been a good source of backlinks, and they will always be, but you have to be smart, here’s what to do to build article directory backlinks the smart way:
1 Build your authority
If you don’t have time, buy an authoritative domain, but let authority be you main priority… it is the way to show Google you are different.
Creating crazy content comes before link building and not the other way around. You need to have something worth pointing those links to. 5 page sites just don’t cut it any more.
3 get a tool called article marketing robot and do this:
– hand spin one of your articles
Look, I don’t do hand spinning any more, as I have money and can afford paying for unique articles, but I want you to know an article I hand spun 4 or 5 years ago not only did rank on page one, but got published on Yahoo small business… you decide whether to do it or not, if you have time to write unique articles or pay to have them written – even better.
– upload it to any of the authoritative directories, here’s a list of some of them:

– Link to the article published on your blog from within the content and don’t worry about anchor texts or whatever. Author box links are worthless and should be avoided.
Just one link is enough!
– Wait some time
– use article marketing robot to spin the article
– review the copies and make them readable
that’s a lot of work and you might wanna hire someone to do it for you. Ya, you are going to need some cash for this type of marketing, just like for any other type.
– Upload them by hand or via the tool to more authoritative directories and link back (from within the article body) to the published on the first tier directory article.
– link some of those copies to the original article on your blog.
That’s how it’s done and you will get lots of links, just don’t expect marvels, article directory links should just be a portion of your link profile
