I don’t know about you, but I just love those wordy titles that kinda reveal half the article.
I wanted to publish something personal today, I don’t talk about my life that much (check my Facebook and you will see)
I don’t know, I’m just not that type of guy, but this article I had to write, as it has the craziest internet marketing lessons I have ever learned, I had to, I lost everything in 2011 mainly because I had no idea how to market, I had always been into building and managing companies, not so much into marketing them.
Well, life has its own ways of teaching when nothing else can.
I don’t know if you know I lost everything in 2011 – my company, half a million in investments, twice as much (at least) in keeping the company afloat for a few years, I also lost a lot of my friends who turned out were friends with my money like most people…
…by the way, if you feel like getting to know me better, enter your email in the form to your right, I’d love to be friends (if you already did, you are sorted).
I lost everything, looked at my laptop (I had a Sony Waio at the time, still have it) and was like:
“fuck this, I’ll make millions online”
I sat down and started educating myself, I was pretty naive back then, as I had no idea marketing was pretty much saying what people want to hear, I know, but it is what it is… and by the way, people want it to be like that.
I have done some testings with my lists and people who get introduced to reality most times even get annoyed, and those who hear what they want from me feel great, stay subscribed and buy…
…which takes me to the first lesson
1 Tell people what they want to hear
If this makes you feel bad, then marketing is certainly not for you. People get mad when you tell the truth, because everyone has their own truth.
I’m not saying you should start lying all over the place, I’m saying you should not play the watchdog of the internet, as you will neither make friends, nor money. The Internet is a weird place filled with mostly weird people, and you want them to be your customers…
…so find a way to give those people something they need and make them feel good about buying from you.
How to do that?
-start a blog and read this article to write content everybody wants.
-create a community (not easy)
-be social – that’s going to be quite of a challenge if you are anything like me, but you have to do it.
You need to be on Facebook and you need to be a sexy person.
2 Absolutely ignore all the bullshit
I’m talking about money snapshots, commission claims, fake lifestyle photos and shit like that.
You have to know people who live well and have money don’t have that need to display it all on Facebook, those who always talk about how much they make and do their best to make you believe they are rich on social media just want to slip you something…
…not to mention all of them are wannabes (no exceptions), those who pretend to be some inspirational gods are fake too.
The thing is people in need seek to be inspired and marketers know that well.
A few years ago there was this guy (we were both affiliates in the same company) who called himself a “hippie jedi” to attract prospects LOL, I know it sounds cool, yet the guy was a joke and lied to a lot of people.
I stopped promoting that product since more buffoons came on board and everything turned in to a joke, the owners had to cancel some accounts later on, but it was too late.
The point is you can get in trouble following the wrong people, as a matter of fact, most people who struggle follow the wrong guy.
All this pretending, plane photos and jedi bullshit is social marketing and it works great, use it to promote if you like it, but be careful who you follow.
3 Find marketing money
Don’t feel bad if you have none… but if you are thinking: “there has to be a way to build my business for free”, you are in for big surprise.
I know I won’t be able to change that and you will keep thinking you can grow for free (by let’s say blogging), and I don’t even want to do that, I’ll just give you an example here:
When I started online I had just lost everything and was thinking exactly the same thing – that I can build my business for free (maybe at some point or another everybody thinks that)… I knew business, but I thought online was different and I was smarter than most people…
…and I struggled for two years until I even made a sale, and let me tell you it is not fun to be in front of the computer 16 hours a day for a few years and not make anything… it burns you out big time (well, I survived, I’m crazy).
Then I found a few hundred bucks, ran Facebook ads and made money instantly.
And I know you are crazy too and can live through such struggle, but why do that when you can just run ads to get people to a capture page redirecting to a cool product and then follow up via email to make money.
People would buy this product anyway (when the target market is right), why not buy from you?
Blogging is not free either, nor is SEO, just find marketing money.
