It’s been a while since Google started ignoring the authorship markup, they still care who the author of a story is, yet I wouldn’t worry that much about it. They dropped the authorship because they had been getting less ad clicks when displaying author pictures in search listings…
you’d think they’d have the brains to have figured that out without playing with us, but it is what it is… maybe they wanted to be certain.
Google Authorship is basically the way to identify yourself in front of Google. Search engines were only counting links in the past in order to rank pages. There were no blogs, or social sites and backlinks were the only way Google could tell whether a site deserved to be on page one or not.
These days it’s a bit different… blogging platforms are the ultimate tool for content creation, social sites like Facebook and Google Plus show the world all the cool content going around the net… and it is way easier for Google to see what and who is important online…
and Google authorship is the first step anybody trying to be on the first page of Google should take. This is how you tell Google your name, how you are doing online, and why you should rank in Google’s engine.
They will surely find out all that even if you don’t claim your identity, but you would just make them a very big favor and make it a lot easier if you did.
Google authorship is linking your Google Plus profile to the content you create… here’s Google’s guide exactly how to do it in a few steps
1 Log in to your WordPress author account and submit your Google plus profile URL under the contact info tab, the same way you see in the picture below: (make sure you have the WordPress SEO by Yoast plug in installed )
3 Make sure you have a “by line” on all your WP pages and blogs and also it matches your Google Plus profile’s name.
That’s all you have to do and you already would have advantage in Google’s rankings… by giving all the information Google needs about you and your content.
You can also use the email verification method which is a bit easier and is explained perfectly by Google.
Google authorship advantages
1 As I already said – better rankings on the search engine. All Google wants is to give their users is better search results… they could do this a lot easier when they know who stands behind the content they show in their index.
2 Better Click Through rates – people like clicking pictures and getting information that is by proven and well-known authors… they are also more likely to click your page link when they see this:
3 Google Plus profile development – if anybody who gets to your page likes it, it is very likely that they would visit your Google Plus profile too…
Google Authorship disadvantages
I don’t think there are any… the only thing that might be a problem is when somebody is not an american citizen. Non american names are always prejudged and you might get passed if there’s anybody called James ranking near you.
That’s not even a Google authorship disadvantage, but I just had to put it put there and warn you about it.
This is the place where you can find whether you verified your Google Authorship. You search results should look like this:
It’s actually simple things like Google Authorship that will help you outrank the competition in future. Google wants to see real people who know what they are talking bout ranking on page one.
